Country: Bahrain
Status: Free

Zainab Al Khawaja, 27, is the daughter of prominent Bahraini human rights activist Abdulhadi Al Khawaja. Because of her father's political activism, Zainab was brought up in exile in Denmark.

Goverment Relations:

Zainab's activism has been on behalf of her father, husband, uncle, and brother-in-law, all of whom were arrested by Bahraini security forces in April. Excluding her uncle, the three men were taken in the middle of the night from their home. Her father was beaten so badly that bones in his face were smashed. Following her family's arrest, Zainab wrote an open letter to President Barack Obama urging him to aid her family. She also went on a hunger strike, which was successful in bringing international attention to her family's case. Responding to her supporters' please, she broke the strike after several days, but she continues to champion her desire for democracy and freedom for her family.
