Mohammed Abbou is a lawyer, human rights activist, and member of the National Council for Freedom in Tunisia. Before being arrested, Abbou wrote a political blog that heavily criticized the government for corruption, and is known for being one of the only lawyers willing to pursue corruption cases against family members of President Ben Ali.
In 2005, Abbou was sentenced to three and half years in prison for denouncing the use of torture in Tunisia, and allegedly attacking a colleague several years prior. While in prison, Abbou protested his country's "repression against those who dissent" and the poor living conditions in prison by staging two hunger strikes. Abbou was released in 2007 on a presidential pardon for the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Tunisia, but was banned from traveling until July 2008.
