On June 14, 2012, Moroccan blogger Mohamed Sokrat was sentenced to two years in jail and also faces a fine of a 500 euros.

This comes after Sokrat, an open proponent of sexual freedom and minority rights, was arrested May 29, 2012 on drug charges. Many Moroccans, including fellow Moroccan blogger, Kacem El Ghazzali, believe these accusations are false and that they actually arrested him for his  opinions on the Moroccan monarchy and political Islam.  El Ghazzali explained, “Making up accusations and charges against internet activists in Morocco is not a new concept, especially under the Islamist Justice and Development Party's rule.”
