Support Mohamed Sokrat: A Plea from Moroccan Blogger Kacem El Ghazzali

June 14, 2012

"Mohamed Sokrat is a good friend of mine. We worked together when he was an active member of our group, “Youth for Separating Religion and Education. ” It was the first Arab secular group to call for a modern, democratic, and secular Morocco.

Today, Sokrat’s family are not allowed to visit their son while he is in prison. Making up accusations and charges against internet activists in Morocco is not a new concept, especially under the Islamist Justice and Development Party's rule. Sokrat’s opinions regarding the monarchy and political Islam are well known. He was one of the first Moroccan bloggers to call for sexual freedom and for minority rights. The Moroccan regime tries to level the playing field with his arrest; our blogs threaten the regime; our voices have power and will be heard.  They should not underestimate us.

I call on the Moroccan regime to release my friend, Mohamed Sokrat , immediately." - Blogger Kacem El Ghazzali "
