Syrian Dissident Released

May 9, 2012
A Young Christian Syrian doctor, George Yaziji, was released from jail on May 8, 2012 after spending two months in prison.  He was arrested and detained without  any formal charges on March 7, 2012.  His family and friends were not informed of his whereabouts until his recent release.

Many believe that his arrest was the result of his anti Assad Facebook posts and for providing medical assistance to injured protesters, who cannot go to Syrian hospitals due to the fear of being arrested or killed by Assad’s Shabiha.

Despite Assad’s claims that his regime is secular and that the security measures in place are intended for radical Islamic insurgents, his regime continues to arrest thousands of peaceful protesters from diverse religious and secular backgrounds.  Many groups feel that Assad is using the protests as an opportunity to target and arrest christians.  Yaziji’s arrest reinforces this belief.

During his detainment, supporters of Yaziji created a Facebook page calling for his freedom. Over 1700 people joined this page, expressing their solidarity with Yaziji.  The cyber community also spoke out by tweeting.
