Syrian Activist Diab Serieh Detained
| May 4, 2012 |
Diab Serieh, a young Syrian activist, was arrested and detained by the Syrian Security Service a few weeks ago in Damascus after posting anti-regime comments on his Facebook page. Friends and family have attempted to find out which prison he is being detained in, but have not received any information from Syrian officials.
Diab was born in Damascus in 1985. He co-founded a secular Syrian youth group called Youth for Syria. While studying part time at Damascus University, he posted his opinions about democracy and liberty on the online youth forum akhawia.net. This drew attention to Youth for Syria by Syrian authorities, leading to his arrest, and the arrest of seven of his friends on December 24, 2005 who were guilty by association. Diab was sentenced to five years in Sednaya prison.
