Moroccan Blogger Praised by Italian Parliamentarian

March 23, 2012

Italian politician Souad Sbai called on Moroccan online activist and CyberDissidents.org blogger board member Kacem El Ghazzali to “build a front of activists” to combat fundamentalist movements in Europe and around the world during a recent phone call.

Sbai, who described herself as an avid admirer of El Ghazzali's work, encouraged him to write about Islamic immigrant women who face hostility from families that do not integrate into Italian secular culture.

She added that that young people have an obligation to defend “human rights in their countries and in the world.”

Moroccon-born Sbai has been the target of death threats in the past for her work with battered women in the immigrant community. She invited El Ghazzali to visit her in Rome and continue their conversation in person.

El Ghazzali is the Moroccan author of the Arabic-language blog “Bahmut,” a highly controversial blog in the Arab world, which discusses secularism in politics. He also recently launched an English-language blog, “Atheistica,” to reach out to non-Arabic speakers.
